Wilde and his stories

The useless virtue

Bertram was a young, rich and lucky cavalier who lived virtuously, like a monk, far from love and passions. Despite all he was sad, so one day he decided to ask the reason to a holy man able to analyze the people’s souls.
The holy man said he was sad because there was a mortal enemy he had to find and to defeat.
The cavalier didn’t find his enemy for ages, so he returned to the holy man tired and aged.
The holy man, who instead was the same since Bertram had seen him for the first time, showed him his damaged and dying face reflected in the lake.

It was the face of his mortal enemy he had searched for all the time.
