W.Turner's "Mount Vesuvius in eruption"

I think that "The eruption of Mount Vesuvius" is one of the most impressive paintings of Turner..
Everything in the painting reminds to movement and to the strong uncontrollable power of nature. Man is terrified and idle in front of the eruption, in fact we can see several men that are trying to escape from that violence. The clever use of colours reminds observants to apocalyptic biblic scene: the bright light in the middle could represent God that is giving punishment to men and this sense of destruction is rounded by blue tones, which reminds to the Final End. Turner

"Vesuvius in eruption" is a painting realized by William Turner. It's obvious that the concept of Sublime dominates all the action because of the strong feeling created in the viewer. At the first view infact the power of the eruption, its hot colour and all the action arouse a strong feeling of fear mixed to a shattering beauty.
These elements contribute to give the idea of the invincible power of nature that can destroy all the human things but  give peace to human soul. A.Di Giovanni

"The Burning of the Houses of Lords and Commons"

In this painting Turner represents the burning and he was able to catch the moment when a  blowing wind shifted the flame. This painting arouses many emotions. It feels a sense of heat and energy for the warms colours but also terror and confusion.

The Passage of Mount St Gothard  is a painting realized by the British artist William Turner.
I think that this picture shows me a sense of scare because of the height.
In addition to this the colour contrast up and down lets me think of the idea of  the sublime. R.Ruggirello VH

Buttermere lake, Turner

In this painting we can see a little lake on the rigth corner. In the landscape Turner shows us a natural skyline represented by some mountains.
After that we can see a dark sky, where in the middle there is a rainbow.
The sublime is represented by two opposite natural elements: the darkness of the sky that makes me feel fear and terror, but the rainbow represents the end of a storm and it’s a symbol of tranquillity and peace. M.Geraci VH

Hannibal and his Army Crossing the Alps - 1812, William Turner

Hannibal and his Army Crossing the Alps - 1812, William Turner
This picture represents Hannibal and his army who were crossing the alps when a snow storm clashed with them. Indeed the protagonist of the painting is the dark sky that seems like a monster that wants to eat the soldiers. So Turner, with this work, underlines man's fragility in the face of nature's power. Looking at this picture we feel different feelings: the  sense of adimiration and reverence because of the greatness and the mysteriousness of the subject but also fear and agony. The ambivalence of feelings creates a sense of astonishment that makes it in agreement with the theory of sublime of Romantic movement.

Turner is one of the most representative painters of the sublime, because in his painting he is able to give us strong feelings. In the painting, the Hannibal’s army is crossing the Alps, in in the middle of a snow storm. The soldiers seems in trouble, they are trying to search a cave or a shelter but they can’t see anything because the storm, that gives the viewer the feeling of fear, is really strong. At the end, we can see a red weak sun that, lighting up the soldiers, gives us the feeling that this storm is going to finish. M.Ragolia

In my opinion this painting is one of the most beautiful of Turner's paintings. Everything in it reminds to concept of the Sublime. "The Burning of the Houses of Lords and Commons" describes the scene in two different parts: the first one, at the bottom, is occupied by the calm water reflecting the fire and the smoke cloud, as men can just think about the destructive power they can't handle during a calm time, and the second part,on the top, is occupied by the high flames and the anger of fire which is represented in all its violence as it would want say to men how cruel an unexpected event could be. The strong contrast of colours highlights the unpredictability of events, infact we can see the red of flames surrounded by the light blue of the water and of the sky of a quite day. In my opinion this contrast would underline the unespected nature of events:we can anticipate some events (as we can do watching the bottom part of the painting), but when they come we are insignificant and useless in front of that dangerous power.

The big burning in the middle of the painting "catches" the interest of the viewers, the contrast between cold and hot colours create in me a lot of suspense.
In my opinion this picture is one of the highest exemples of the sublime, in fact it gave me a big sense of astonishment and I think it describes perfectly the great power of Nature.

Analysis of William Turner's painting: "The shipwreck".

Risultati immagini per the shipwreck william turner

In a chaotic composition, we can see a dreadful catastrophe.
A shipwreck may be regarded as one of the worst happening that a human can go through.
Turner portrayed the power of the nature, which is amplified by the power of the waves of the sea that are able to destroy a boat like the one that is painted into the painting.
There is a destructive nature (sea is no respecter of humans), but at the same time it has a grate charm.
Symbolically, Turner rapresented the contrast between man and nature: man cannot do anything against the devasting power of nature. He only has to submit himself to it.
My impression as I look at the painting is fear, as men are destined to almost certain death, but at the same time I am astonished by the sublime power of the sea. M. Lo Piccolo VH, D.Sciortino

This picture astonishes me for the armony between the elements. In fact there are some beautiful characters but also very terrified.
The terror is given by the expression of fishermen that makes me feel anxiety for what happened; while the beautiful is the little piece of sky, that represents the hope to survive for the fishermen.
I think that colours give also harmony to the painting, in fact there is a contrast between the darkness of the storm and the light of the sky.

"Snow storm" is nowdays considered one of Turner's masterpieces. It shows a steam-boat at the heart of the vortex. We can observe the battle between the forces of nature and the wonder of technology. Turner in this painting uses dark colors like the black, the brown and the grey, in a whirling way to create in the observer a sense of confusion and fear. In my opinion that sense of confusion and fear is very similar to that one hypothetical people feel in this steam-boat. Giulia Mezzatesta VH

William Turner's paintings

I have chosen the painting "The Burning of the Houses of Lords and Commons" by William Turner.
When I saw this painting what I had felt was admiration and fear, and this is a perfect example of the astonishment (an effect of the sublime by Burke). So in this painting I have found the beautiful part of nature (on the right) and the scary part of nature (on the left), represented by the fire. In conclusion  my emotions were in conflict like the colours of this painting.  Erika Schieraimage1.JPG

Romantic Poetry in VH

A rainy evening inspired me to write this poem. That day I felt really melancholic and sad because of some facts that had happened to me lately . So the same night I needed a vent valve like poetry and I tried to write a poem down about my feelings. Stefani Sala V H

Chatarsis

A thousand thunderstorms
In the sky as in my head.
I was pensive and wondering
Why his first day living a child cries,
The sky shouts and shuts with men
just to make us feel less lonely.
Teardrops nourish our lands
And let flowers bloom again.

The meeting

And in that moment I saw her,
lost in my deep dreams;
She came like a thunder
and everything changed.
I jumped into her
She was beautiful like a sunset
but still more ephemeral

The Night

When the night comes
The whole world different becomes.
Just the darkness can be seen
And me, myself and I stay alone.
The light falls
And the soul lives
The real life is this
That's the magic of the night   by D.Sciortino and M.Lo Piccolo

Like a butterfly dancing on flowers,

I saw her flying on her feet;
her stunning wings caught anyone along the street:
our point of view was different from hers.
So tiny and free,
so lavender dressed,
so special to see
you could not be not impressed.
I felt the rhythm through my heart
and her jumps pulsed the sound apart.
As a butterfly just born
that dances around roses
unaware she may be torn,
she flies here, softly,
lighting up everyone's faces
in her moves performed brightly.

I FOUND MY SOUL IN A RAINING DAY
I found my soul in a raining day
and we chose together our way
The rain over my head was the solution
for my dirty heart full of pollution

Those thousand drops open up me incredible worlds
they were like a door to my eyes,
and today too, to explain it, I can't find the words.

Romantic poetry

I was there, sitttin' on the beach
When suddenly something surprised me
The beauty of a sunset in a beautiful
Evening. The waves with their sound
Caught me and moved me to the infinity
Of my thoughts, where I found a dream.

The clouds

When I was a child, I saw in the sky
something which was similar to a piece of cotton.
During the day it started to rain and
I saw that beautiful thing again.
They were white, grey or blue
and I was happy to take a picture of that beautiful view.
