THE STORY OF AN OLD MAN

During a hard winter
Long like a 10 December
Snow fell down from the sky
Copious, cold, white and shy

And in this beautiful landscape
There was an old man
That from the war didn’t escape
He tells a story about a dead man

Between a tear and another tear
He recounts a wretched story
About a war when died, John, dear
He knows that John’s soul is in Purgatory

The heart of this man was broken
By a bullet that split what was unbroken
He has been crying for 10 year
10 like this hard winter and a man’s fear

John’s body fell down going out
He fell to the ground white and cold
His soul by a bullet was carried out
In a puddle of blood

  1. I think this is a very sad story but also very realistic. It lets us understanding how much the war is cruel and violent with soldiers who only want to protect their country and their dear family members: soldiers don’t care about their life because they put other’s one on the first place. This is a reality that makes us consider ouselves very lucky because nowdays in our country there are no wars since so many years but there are still many places where children live wars since their birth and every day for them there is the risk to lose their life or their relatives. Developed countries should fight to stop this fact because everyone deserves to live a peaceful and safe life.

  2. This story moves me because it reminds me of when my great-grandmother told me how her husband died in the war. As she told it to me, I could see the sadness in her eyes and the despair she felt remembering what happened. She told me that the war took the love of her life away from her, and this is a terrible thing.
Nowdays we are all also living through a war, even if under different circumstances, which must be defeated as soon as possible because there is nothing worse in the world than losing someone you love, whether on the battlefield or in a hospital bed.

  3. I think that this story is very moving and sad. This story makes us understanding that the war is horrible and cruel. The war is at the limits of the absurd and it is unthinkable how violent and cruel man is. Maybe we could do a link between the war and the situation that we are living. The war, obviously, is the worse thing in this world but the Covid-19 is killing a lot of people and so
we have to stay at home. I almost feel like we are in war. You can’t go out because you could contract the virus...in war, instead, you can’t go out because you could be killed. Now the fear is dominating everything and luckily most people are staying at home however some people go out because they think they are ‘immune’ and they doesn’t understand the gravity of the situation. Returning to the poetry, I think we should try to have peace in the World so that other people are not killed by a bullet.

  7. NOEMI ANGILERI: This story is about an old man who fought in a war and he lost a friend, called John: he died for a bullet. The old man thinks to him and cries: for ten years he remembered him and he is afraid to the figure of his lifeless body stained with blood. The writer tells that the war produce pain and destruction but not everyone can accept the victims. Such as it happens now: the coronavirus grows and a few survive. Like in the war we are losing relatives and friends and we are forced to look helpless. With our assistance we can’t stopped the bullet of disease. The only thing we can do is to stay at home to avoid that the virus spreading more.
